IBM RESEARCH
Since the time when I worked at Intermetrics in the 1970s, I've been in the field of computer languages. It was fun, but it did, eventually, flag. Given that my passion was making music videos, I took a chance and asked an IBM Vice-President to give me something to get passionate about. He gave me the Computer Science Multimedia Magazine. Talk about jumping in with both feet! I couldn't have defined "multimedia" for you in those days. But my husband Paul found 1" broadcast machines that weren't being used, and we pulled together a studio in a crowded closet where I was forced to have good posture or the camera would poke into my back. Eventually, IBM let my husband build a half million dollar studio around my project, and life WAS a lot of fun.

Editing to voice is far easier than editing to music, so I always taught IBMers by having them make music videos. I made all of my crews stay, if we had a short day, and spend the rest of the time teaching me, so I got a marvelous education and got to try things I never thought to try. Most of the IBM videos were really experiments to try some new thing I hadn't tried before - steadicam, or an editing shop for fancy effects, or multiple angle shots for scene editing. I wrote the video scripts, directed them, sometimes did 2nd camera, and edited them. Only in the early days did I have to do any graphics. My husband wrote our edit controller, so I was in a completely non-standard world, but it was responsive when I wanted to try something strange.

When the magazine project ended, I became a consultant to various Research groups, showing them how they could use video in their research project to increase its sexiness.

INTERMEDIA ENTERPRISES
When Paul and I came out of IBM on early retirement, we put together a small company called InterMedia Enterprises, and started doing videos about computers for BBN, and one for MIT. I still hired a cameraman, but Paul usually handled audio, as he'd taken a one-on-one workshop in Audio in Hollywood. We had a much lower quality setup - SuperVHS instead of 1" broadcast and Betacam SP, but it was fun, and that counted for a lot. Paul did most of our graphics, though we had to capture it with a camera in the early days. And once we were asked to create a video about a project that didn't exist. We got no more information than some handwaving about how it should work. So we got to design our own interface, and then simulate the working of the system. I truly don't believe that person ever understood that that was something you couldn't ask a video producer to do. Except he did, and we did. And that was REALLY fun!

IBM was also generous with their early retirement benefits, and I got to take workshops in Editing the Scene with the editor of The Pawnbroker and Screenplay Writing. I'd have to say that if there is anything close to the fun of working in a music video box, it's writing a screenplay. They both put tight limits on you, so you have to get very creative to push out your walls. If you love making music videos, I really encourage you to consider writing movie screenplays, too. You'll be surprised at how much fun they are.

VIDEO FORMATS
All videos with cream backgrounds are in MP4 format and are suitable for playing on your computer. If you don't have an MP4 codec, you can get the VLC Player or a free version of the 3ivx Player, which is also described at the free-codecs.com website. If the free software expires, 3ivx has a $6.95 player available at their store.

All videos with gold backgrounds are extremely high quality MPEG-2 format, and are suitable for playing directly on your computer, as well as for watching on your TV. You can convert the video into a form that can be burned to DVDs through an authoring package, such as the free, open-source "authoring package" which can be found at the
