What had saved Moore's butt for all those many years was the simple fact that he was a really lousy poet. His book had not received wide play, and the terrible paper it was printed on meant that it is exceptionally fragile today, and not let out by research institutions. Given the fact that his work wasn't reprinted, people just extrapolated from the Christmas poem and assumed that his other work, while serious, was still good.

It wasn't.
