And advice was something that he enjoyed giving as well as getting.

Henry's daughter Catharine had married Arthur Breese, a young lawyer who became Chief Clerk of the New York Supreme Court. Arthur and Catharine's son had moved to the frontiers of Illinois and gone quickly to the top of his profession, becoming Chief Justice of the Illinois Supreme Court and U.S. Senator from Illinois.

The Chancellor Kent to whom Henry refers was a law partner of Henry's brother Gilbert, though the partnership went sour and Gilbert took on his young student, Smith Thompson, as a partner. James Kent's sister was married to the brother of Jonas Platt, Henry and Gilbert's brother-in-law. Besides New York State Chancellor, James Kent was also Chief Justice of the New York Supreme Court.
