The unit to which Henry was going was to be under the command of his cousin Janet's husband, General Richard Montgomery.
Janet was the granddaughter of Colonel Henry Beekman, and had spent a great deal of time in her grandfather's home,
as had Henry Livingston.
Montgomery had been given command of the expedition to invade Canada because of the ill health of
Henry's other cousin, General Philip Schuyler.
