When you think of early colonists, there's a tendency to think of movies showing the rough frontier life. Life may not have been as easy as it was in Amsterdam, but it certainly wasn't as rough as our imaginations might make it.

There was a constant stream of boats coming from Europe in the middle 1600's, and those boats weren't just bringing necessities of life. Glazed Dutch bricks for houses were used as ballast for the ships, allowing for very beautiful early architecture.

Gardens were plentiful, as this description of a property up for sale makes clear.
