Another fascinating lead was provided by Susan Schock, who had noticed a connection between Washington Irving and the Livingston family in a small biography of Dr. Edward Livingston. Since Don had moved back the date of creation of the Saint Nicholas story to around the time of the writing of Knickerbocker's History of New-York, connections between Henry and Washington Irving interested us greatly.
