It was a good and a happy marriage. With the birth of their first child, Catharine, Henry was off to war, but he returned by the end of 1775, safe from an Expedition into Canada that ended with the death of Henry's cousin's husband, General Richard Montgomery.

Henry and Sarah's second child was a boy, Henry Welles. But when the child was only a year old, he died in a fire that occurred on a day when Henry was killing hogs. Henry was desolate, with religion as his solace and hope.
