Henry Livingston, Jr.
Catharine Breese Livingston
1809-1814
Tombstone

I fondly nursed an opening rose,
And view'd its beauties every day;
But ah! a withering storm arose
And swept my lovely flower away.

Catharine was named for Henry's oldest daughter, the wife of Arthur Breese, who died just before Catharine was born. Henry was devastated by the death of this youngest daughter. The family story was that he would get up and leave the room if her name were mentioned.

Dutchess County Yearbook
Henry Livingston's daughter, Catharine Breese Livingston, died September 13, 1814, and was buried in the Livingston family ground. Dr. Thomas copied from the stone at her grave these lines, assumed to have been written by Henry Livingston.
