Will Rogers Picks A Story For This Spot
Simpson's Daily Leader-Times, 18 Oct 1929

THE Worst Story I heard today was told to me by my old Boss, Col. Zack Mulhall who was with the 101 Ranch Wild West Show. Col. Mulhall comes from Mulhall, Oklahoma. He is the father of Lucille, just about the greatest Girl Roper that ever dragged a loop. And what a wonderful woman Mrs. Mulhall is! She sure has fed me many a time. I was with his show on the Pike in St. Louis during the World's Fair, and the next year we come with a little Show to Madison Square Garden. That was 20 years ago. I stayed here and they had to put me on the stage to get rid of me. But I sure had a lot of fun with that Mulhall Outfit. We didn't get much; we didn't want much; and we didn't need much.

Well, down in Mulhall, Oklahoma, one time there was a judge. A young easterner who "kinder wanted to be a tough Guy" was brought up before this Judge for shooting off his Pistol in the street.

"Did you shoot your pistol off in the street?" the judge asked. "If you did I will fine you $20."

"Yes Judge, but I didn't hit anybody."

"Well, I will fine you $20 just the same. You might have hit an Angel."

Now what makes that a bad story is that it was in Mulhall, Okla., and the young fellow could have come clear if he had taken the case to some other Town. Because they could have proved that in those days there had never been an Angel near Mulhall - outside of Mrs. Mulhall.
