STEERS WERE A WILD LOT
THEY GAVE THE COWBOYS LOTS OF TROUBLE YESTERDAY

The Des Moines Leader, 10 Oct 1901

...

The third best time made in the contest was by William Barker of Texas. Time, 1:02 1-2. Following Mr. Barker came Miss Lucille Mulhall, the daring lady rider, and Bruce Norton, in a half-mile race, the honors going to Miss Mulhall.

The quarter-mile race had four entries, Bruce Norton, of Texas, Thomas Isbell and Sam Cobb of Indian territory, Walter Davidson of Texas and E. L. Law of California. The race was won by Cobb in :35 1-2. For this race Mulhall offered $100 to any horse that would beat the cowboy ponies, but no outside entries were made.

The Mulhall cowboys will give another exhibition at the fair grounds today. Prizes aggregating $1,000 are to be given to the cowboys making the best time in the roping, throwing and tying contests and as there is considerable rivalry among the represention of the different states, the contest today bids fair to be the best of the week. The cowboys go from here to St. Louis where an exhibition will be given Sunday for a purse of $1,000.
