Memories of taking Will Rogers to NYC
The Springfield Leader, 24 Oct 1927

Col. Joe C. Miller, 58, oldest of the three brothers who own the 101 ranch at Ponca City, died last week, a victim of carbon monoxide gas.

Colonel Joe told a correspondent for the Kansas City Star recently about the time they took Will Rogers to New York.

"Brother Zack and Zack Mulhall and I had a trick riding show in New York and we took Will along as one of our ropers. One night Will came to us and told us about going into a restaurant where there was some dancing going on. And Will got to twirling his rope in the restaurant and making some of his remarks and made a big hit with everybody. I remember he came back and told us the manager of the place wanted him to swing his rope in there regular and we all laughed with him about such a stunt as that - twirling a rope in a restaurant. It surely seemed funny.

Rogers twirled his rope in Springfield last winter and the 101 show has exhibited here several times. Zack Mulhall was once general livestock agent of the Frisco and is well known in Springfield. He finally left the Frisco and went back to Oklahoma. His daughter was also of the wild west and once gave a riding exhibition here.
