Over the twenty-one years between the poem's first publication and Moore's claim of the poem, those reindeer got a lot of practice answering to a variety of names. Blixem became Blixen and Nixon, before ending up as Blitzen. Dunder was renamed Donder.

And it wasn't just the names. The rhythm of the lines changed, too.

    ON! Dunder ON!
