Anne McVickar was left with the Schuyler family by her father when he came to fight in the British wars. After she returned to Scotland, she married a minister and, to support herself after her death, wrote a series of highly regarded books. A friend of Sir Walter Scott, Scott recommended her for a pension from the King.

Growing up around Henry's family, and being only eight years younger than Henry, many of the attitudes shown in Anne Grant's book can be observed in Henry's own writing.
